Frequently Asked Questions

Sticky Earth is a pottery studio in Melbourne’s west

Products are original, handmade and produced in small batches. Read below for answers to some common questions about orders and how the pottery is made.

Techniques & features

How is your pottery made?

My ceramics are made over a six or seven day cycle. Once I’ve formed (‘thrown’) a piece on the potter’s wheel, it goes into the kiln for firing.

Once this first firing is complete, I then apply a glaze, and allow it to dry. Now it’s time for the second firing, which occurs at a very high temperature – more than 1000 degrees. This high temperature allows the elements inside the clay to fuse together and become strong, waterproof and safe for use. Watch a video to see for yourself!

What materials do you use? Are they safe?

My products are all made from stoneware, making them practical for everyday use. They are finished with high quality, non-toxic glazes that I purchase from reputable suppliers in Melbourne, or mix from scratch.
Each glaze I use is made from a unique list of ingredients – so please don’t hesitate to contact me to discuss materials or techniques in more detail.

Purchasing & orders

Where can I buy your products?

I’m a regular stallholder at the Rose Street Artist’s Market in Fitzroy, and from time to time attend the Heide Market in Heidleberg and the Ceres Market in Brunswick East – follow my socials for a heads up! You can also view my current stock or discuss custom orders by visiting my home studio in Sunshine, Melbourne.

Around Melbourne, regular stockists include Lonni (Yarraville), Merriville Home (Fitzroy North) and Studio 309 (South Melbourne).

Or of course buy online via this website.

I'm interested in becoming a stockist - do you do wholesale?

Enquiries from potential stockists are welcome – whether you’re in Melbourne or further afield. Because Sticky Earth pieces are unique items made in small batches, it might not be possible to fill very large orders.

Do you do custom orders?

I’m happy to chat about custom sizing for products or designs (including glazes) within my current repertoire.

Please note that my ceramics are made using traditional wheel-thrown techniques. Each of batch is unique and small variables in the clay, glazes or even the weather, meaning it’s not possible to match exact specifications to the millimetre.

Unfortunately I’m not able to fulfil highly customised designs (e.g. to matching colours or drawings).

An item I've purchased has developed a fault - what should I do?

Because my products are fired at high temperatures meaning they are almost always very robust and durable.
If a crack or other fault does happen to appear, however, it’s important to stop using the item and contact me immediately for a replacement.

Because all of my products are unique, on rare occasions faults can occur with the materials, for example where a certain glaze does not bond well to the type of clay. Variables in humidity and weather can also play a part – though this is also what makes handcrafted tableware an antidote to mass-produced factory products!

Classes

Do you run ceramics classes?

Please get in touch if you are interested learning pottery. I run a small number of classes each week for individuals or duos. These are conducted at my home studio in Sunshine (Melbourne) and include materials and firing.

Do you have a second pottery wheel for teaching purposes?

My studio is equipped with two pottery wheels which allows for students to follow along or work in tandem.
